Agios Athanasios of Drama is situated at the NA of the county, close to the borders of the prefectures of Drama - Kavala. It is built on the national road that crosses the plain of Voirani, located 13 km from Drama and 26 from Kavala. The village is flat and the climate is continental and very healthy (wet winters with little snow and warm summers with little rain.

In the village of 3560 inhabitants reside (1300) families, while immigrants abroad amounted Sousse 1150.
All are refugees from Pontus, Thrace and Asia Minor. Specifically, Pontian Greeks, 57%, Thracians of Eastern Rumelia, 17%, Thracians of Western Thrace, 22%, and Asia Minor refugees,  22% .
All settled in the village during the exchange of populations, 1922, 1923.

The refugees, coming to earth of Drama were adapted into the Greek reality, while maintaining their rich cultural heritage. Thus, the Cultural Association of Agios Athanasios of Drama  was  founded in 1977 for the old people to remember and the young ones to learn.
